All you need to know

A minimum of 16 years of education leading to a degree programme is required for applying to the MS Mathematics Programme.

As a minimum academic performance, all applicants must have a CGPA of at least 2.4 (on a scale of 4) or at least 60% marks in all university-level degrees.

Applicants applying to the MS Mathematics Programmes must have their Bachelor’s (or Master’s) degree in any one of the following areas:

•  Mathematics
•  Statistics
•   Physics
•  Any other closely related disciplines determined by the Mathematics Graduate Committee.

Applicants who hold a Bachelor’s degree of less than four years duration or have earned their Bachelor’s (or Master’s) degree from foreign institutions must provide an equivalence certificate verifying 16 years of education, issued by the Higher Education Commission (HEC) of Pakistan. Similarly, applicants who have obtained their degrees from institutions not listed with the HEC, Pakistan, will be required to obtain an Equivalence Certificate from the HEC. Applicants residing outside Pakistan are required to take the following two (2) admissions tests in order to be considered for Fall 2026 admission:

• GRE – General Test; and
• GRE – Subject Test in Mathematics

GRE scores must be reported to LUMS officially from the testing agency. The college code for reporting GRE (General) and GRE Subject Test scores to LUMS is 0679.

NOTE:

• The LGAT and SBASSE Subject Test scores will be valid only for the admission of Fall 2026.
• The LGAT and SBASSE Subject Test scores will be used for application evaluation and, hence, will not be disclosed to applicants.

Exemption for applicants who have taken Graduate Record Examination (GRE) tests

• Applicants who have taken the Graduate Record Examination GRE (General) (through the Educational Testing Service USA) during the last two (2) years (i.e., after April 25, 2024) and obtained an aggregate score of 300 in the quantitative and verbal sections may choose not to take the LGAT. 
• Applicants who have taken the GRE Subject Test in Mathematics (through the Educational Testing Service USA) during the last two (2) years (i.e. after April 25, 2024) and obtained a score at the 60th percentile or above may choose not to take the SBASSE Subject Test in Mathematics

Shortlisted applications will be reviewed by the relevant committee to finalise the admission decision. Applicants are encouraged to provide complete information regarding their academic achievements, research reports, attended workshops, and extracurricular activities, and must tell LUMS about their success stories in order to substantiate their applications. Applicants must provide complete and correct information regarding their academics, work experience and test attempts. The application will be evaluated on the basis of information provided at the time of application submission.

Performance in Interview

Shortlisted applicants may be requested to appear for an interview.

The admission application will be considered for evaluation after the successful completion of the following Four (4) STEPS by the applicants on or before the stipulated deadlines: 

1. Online Admission Application submission (through the IMM Airtable form);
2. Online submission of scanned copies of required supporting documents; 
3. Submission of an appropriate Application Processing Fee and Test Fee (if applicable); 
4. Online Submission of Financial Aid Application (if applicable) by the due date.

The IMM-Pakistan academic programme consists of 5 courses in Fundamental Mathematics whose purpose is to prepare students for advanced research work.

At the end of the first year, students choose a topic on which to write their IMM thesis under the co-supervision of an international and a local faculty member. Usually this will be a topic inspired by one of the courses taken in the first year, and co-supervised by the lecturers of that course, but in principle can also be on any other topic of interest as long as appropriate supervisors can be found.

During the summer between their first and second year, students start more in-depth background reading on the topic of the thesis and then continue working on the thesis during the year. In some cases funding may be available for students to visit their international supervisors for a few weeks.

The IMM thesis is not expected to contain any original publishable results but is expected to go beyond straightforward repetition of material in standard textbooks. It is meant to give students the experience and feeling of doing research and should therefore contain exercises solved independently by the student, who is also expected to be pro-active and demonstrate initiative in the choice of topic and exercises.

During the second year the students may additionally spend a few hours a week as teaching assistants for undergraduate courses, giving them additional experience of communicating and teaching mathematics.
