Pakistan – Academic programme

The IMM-PAKISTAN programme is held at the Syed Babar Ali School of Science and Engineering (SBASSE) is a prestigious, two-year Master’s Programme.

Why should students apply?

  • Competitive admission of highly motivated and qualified local and international students.
  • A two-year programme that combines coursework and cutting-edge research.
  • Rigorous coursework on modern Mathematics combined with conceptual and theoretical reflections.
  • High-calibre faculty and visiting professors from leading institutions engaged in team teaching and joint-supervision.
  • Opportunities for short-term research visits for students in the leading international research institutes.
  • Graduating students will receive a Master’s Degree from LUMS, along with IMM certification.
  • Admitted students receive a full scholarship that covers all tuition costs and living expenses to pursue the programme with the needed financial support.
  • Join alumni networks to inspire each other with opportunities and learn and foster mutual progress in Mathematics both in academic and work places.

International faculty professors are in close cpnnection with students and guarantee support and tutoring every week of the semester on average.

The IMM’s innovative teaching model involves programme-wide collaboration between international and local faculty. Each course is taught by a team of one local professor and two international professors who each visit for two weeks, i.e., four weeks in total. This approach means international professors are present almost every week of the semester, enabling students to benefit from international expertise as well as ongoing support from local faculty.

The Department’s research environment is enriched by weekly seminars held virtually and/or physically, including the John Conway Spirited Seminar Series. The department also hosts regular workshops and thematic research schools.

About the courses

The IMM-Pakistan academic programme consists of 8 courses (5 courses in the first year and 3 in the second year) in Fundamental Mathematics whose purpose is to prepare students for advanced research work.

At the end of the first year, students choose a topic on which to write their IMM thesis under the co-supervision of an international and a local faculty member. Usually this will be a topic inspired by one of the courses taken in the first year, and co-supervised by the lecturers of that course, but in principle can also be on any other topic of interest as long as appropriate supervisors can be found.

During the summer between their first and second year, they start some more in-depth background reading on the topic of the thesis and then continue working on the thesis during the year. In some cases funding may be available for students to visit their international supervisors for a few weeks.

The IMM thesis is not expected to contain any original publishable results but is expected to go beyond straightforward repetition of material in standard textbooks. It is meant to give students the experience and feeling of doing research and should therefore contain exercises solved independently by the student, who is also expected to be pro-active and demonstrate initiative in the choice of topic and exercises.

During the second year the students also spend a few hours a week as teaching assistants for undergraduate courses, giving them additional experience of communicating and teaching mathematics. Explore the module outlines, below, for details of each course on offer in the current IMM-PAKISTAN programme.
