IMM Algeria
2025 - 2026

Algeria

The IMM-ALGERIA is a prestigious, two-year Master’s Programme with the following features that characterize its innovative education model.

  • Competitive admission of highly motivated and qualified local and international students.
  • A two-year programme that combines coursework and cutting-edge research.
  • Rigorous coursework on modern Mathematics combined with conceptual and theoretical reflections.
  • High-calibre faculty and visiting professors from leading institutions engaged in team teaching and joint-supervision.
  • International faculty professors are in close connection with students and guarantee support and tutoring every week of the semester, on average.
  • Graduates will receive a Master’s Degree from the National Higher School of Mathematics (NHSM), along with IMM certification.
  • Opportunities for short-term research visits for students in the leading international research institutes.
  • Admitted students receive a full scholarship that covers all tuition costs and living expenses to pursue the programme with the needed financial support.
  • Join alumni networks to inspire each other with opportunities and learn and foster mutual progress in Mathematics based on individuals’ aspirations.

It aims to give students the experience and feeling of doing research

The IMM’s innovative teaching model involves programme-wide collaboration between international and local faculty. Each course is taught by a team of one local professor and two international professors, who each visit for two weeks, making a total of four weeks.

This approach ensures that international professors are present almost every week of the semester, enabling students to benefit from international expertise as well as ongoing support from local faculty.

Courses overview

The IMM-Algeria academic programme follows the standard European M1-M2 format, with eight courses during the first year, covering the most important areas of mathematics at an advanced level. This is followed by four more specialised courses in the second year.

The M1 courses remain the same every year, as they form the core foundation for advanced studies. In contrast, the M2 courses vary depending on the availability of international lecturers and generally include courses from various areas such as algebra, analysis, and geometry.

At the end of the first year, students select a topic for their IMM thesis under the co-supervision of an international and a local faculty member. This topic is often inspired by one of the courses taken in the first year and is usually co-supervised by the lecturers of that course. However, it can also be on any other topic of interest, provided appropriate supervisors are available.

During the summer between their first and second year, students begin in-depth background reading on their chosen thesis topic and continue working on the thesis throughout their second year. In some cases, funding may be available for students to visit their international supervisors for a few weeks.

The IMM thesis is not expected to contain original publishable results but must go beyond straightforward repetition of material from standard textbooks. It aims to give students the experience and feeling of doing research. The thesis should include independently solved exercises and demonstrate the student’s initiative in selecting topics and exercises.
