Interaction with invited speakers will provide insights on how to think like a mathematician, what it means to solve a problem in mathematics versus solving a problem in the dynamic world through thinking mathematically.

To start the new Academic Year 2021-2022, the IMM is organising an orientation week for its students and other participants which includes a number of activities on the topic of thinking mathematically.

MATHEMATICAL THINKING AND PROBLEM SOLVING

One of the most important factors affecting our learning of advanced mathematics is the way we study. It is tempting to try to memorise all the words in a definition or all the steps in a proof, but is that what studying mathematics is? Will this kind of knowledge help when it comes to doing your own research? What does it mean to understand something?

International experts will come together for a week in a series of practical workshops, panel discussions, inspirational talks, and special sessions, to discuss strategies and techniques for effective mathematical thinking and problem solving.

Active engagement in the various events provide students a holistic view of mathematical thinking and problem solving which will inspire them to use these skills in their future studies and professional life.

Activities concentrating on the notion of mathematical creativity in the various topics, as examples of how one can live this experience, highlighting the creative process, the different mathematical thinking processes involved, and acquiring mathematical skills.

Other activities in the orientation week include a number of special talks and discussion reserved for women participants.

WOMEN IN MATHEMATICS

Junior and Senior Women researchers from many different countries will share stories about how they become professional mathematicians, the challenges they faced, and the satisfaction they have achieved. Opportunities will be available to interact and ask questions. Some of these sessions will be reserved for women participants.

WIM INSPIRATION TALK

Through these sessions, the invited speakers will highlight their journeys as successful female mathematicians to encourage and inspire female students of the IMM program. They will share their personal and professional experiences with students and engage them in interactive question and answer sessions.

WIM SPECIAL SESSIONS

These sessions focus on themes of interests such as Enhancing visibility for WIM, Work life balance for WIM, Career paths for WIM and Future for WIM – the way forward. At the end of the event, students will be inspired and encouraged by the professional trajectories of these WIM.
