CIMPA – Indonesia

What is CIMPA?
It stands for Centre International de Mathématiques Pures et Appliquées, or International centre for pure and applied mathematics. Every year they organize schools and workshops to help young mathematicians grow their skills and connect with experts, with an incredible past history of 400 schools in over 70 countries. This year, the CIMPA summer program is taking place in Yogyakarta, Indonesia, from 14 to 25 July. The participants will focus on “number theory and it’s practical applications in cryptography and coding theory“.

For those unfamiliar
Number theory is a branch of mathematics that studies numbers and their properties
Cryptography is about keeping informations safe, just like how your messages are protected on apps and websites
Coding theory is used to make sure digital data, like e-mails, get sent correctly
These subjects play a big role in things we use everyday, like online banking, messaging apps and computer systems.

The program is designed to bridge the gap between abstract theory and real world application, through a combination of lectures and interactive sessions. Additionally, students will explore real-world case studies and deepen their understanding of those subjects while also applying theories, thanks to a series of courses exploring how mathematical notions are being applied in cryptography and coding theory. These courses emphasize real-world examples, self-programmed protocol implementation and hand on application.

In addition to the Yogyakarta school, one of our students also took part in the Bandung Collaborative Workshop, held from 7 to 11 July at the Institut Teknologi Bandung (ITB)
This one-week workshop brought together small groups of participants, exactly 5, to work on research projects under the guidance of experienced mentors. The workshop was led by CIMPA’s director Christophe Ritzenthaler in collaboration with local professors Intan Muchtadi and Ikha Magdalena from ITB.

These opportunities are not just about learning mathematics, they’re also about connecting with international research communities, gaining confidence and opening doors for future careers in science and technology.
