This summer, mathematics takes IMM students beyond the classroom and into an international environment where ideas, collaboration and discovery come together. This Monday 6 July, marks the beginning of the (second) 2026 Summer Internship Programme (SIP), one of the initiatives offered to selected students of the International Mathematics Master.
Following a selection process, a group of IMM students from Algeria and Pakistan has been chosen to take part in six weeks of advanced mathematical training, international collaboration and academic exchange in Italy.
Organization
Organised within the framework of the “Mathematics for Humanity” grant programme by the International Centre for Mathematical Sciences (ICMS), the Summer Internship Programme is jointly delivered with the Abdus Salam International Centre for Theoretical Physics (ICTP), the Scuola Matematica Interuniversitaria (SMI) and the Consorzio Interuniversitario per l’Alta Formazione in Matematica (CIAFM) as an affiliated partner.
First Part : 6 – 18 July, Trieste
The programme opens at ICTP in Trieste, where participants will spend the first two weeks immersed in an inspiring environment. Through advanced mini-courses, research seminars and scientific outreach activities, students will have the opportunity to explore mathematical topics beyond the boundaries of their regular curriculum while engaging with internationally recognised researchers and fellow young mathematicians from around the world.
One of the highlights of this first phase is the opportunity for every participant to present their own mathematical interests. Guided by experienced mentors, students will prepare a research poster before presenting it during an open poster session, followed by the traditional Gong Talk : a dynamic / engaging format that encourages scientific communication and lively discussion.
Second Part : 20 July – 14 August, Perugia
The journey will then continue in Perugia, where students will attend the prestigious Scuola Matematica Interuniversitaria (SMI). Over four weeks, they will deepen their knowledge by choosing two advanced courses between : Algebraic Geometry, Complex Analysis, Differential Geometry, Functional Analysis, and Mathematical Statistics. Combining lectures with intensive problem-solving sessions, this second stage offers participants the chance to strengthen both their theoretical understanding and their mathematical reasoning under the guidance of expert lecturers.
As the new edition begins
More than a summer school, the Summer Internship Programme embodies the International Mathematics Master’s commitment to creating opportunities that connect talented students. By bringing together academic excellence, mentorship and cultural exchange, SIP allows participants to experience firsthand what it means to do mathematics in a truly global setting.
As the 2026 edition begins, we wish all participating students an inspiring and rewarding journey. May the weeks ahead be filled with challenging problems, stimulating conversations, new perspectives and unforgettable memories; both inside and outside the lecture hall.
Stay tuned for more updates regarding their Journey in Italy!
