From Small-Town Dreams to Global Mathematics: My Journey Through IMM

My name is Humaira Arshad Butt, and I come from a small town in Gujrat, Pakistan. Growing up, I was always curious and passionate about solving problems, which naturally led me to mathematics. My love for the subject was nurtured by my high school teacher, Mr. Kaleem Ashraf, who inspired me to pursue mathematics as a career. In a region where proper career counseling was almost non-existent, his encouragement was like a guiding light. After high school, I started my academic journey at the University of Gujrat, where I completed a two-year Bachelor of Science (BSc) program in mathematics. During this time, I not only excelled academically—graduating at the top of my class—but also gained hands-on experience as a teaching assistant. This role allowed me to assist my professors in classroom instruction and gave me an early glimpse into the world of teaching. To further my education, I transferred to Government College University, Lahore, to pursue a two-year Master of Science (MSc) in Mathematics. These two degrees combined were equivalent to an internationally recognized four-year bachelor’s degree. Moving to Lahore and excelling at such a renowned institution was a significant step, not only for me but also for my family, as I was the first in my family to study away from home.
Starting My Career:
A Blend of Teaching and Management: After completing my MSc, I was offered a unique opportunity to work in the field of education. My alma mater trusted me with a role that combined teaching and management. While continuing to teach mathematics, I was also given the responsibility of managing a new academic program in my hometown. This role allowed me to launch initiatives that provided more opportunities for local students, especially women, to pursue higher education. It was incredibly fulfilling to contribute to my community and inspire others to follow their dreams. Discovering IMM: A Chance Encounter: In 2022, I was uncertain about my next steps. Should I go for a master’s program or focus on finding a full-time job? I started applying for various positions and programs without any specific direction, hoping to find an opportunity that felt right. One day, while scrolling through Facebook, I came across an advertisement for the International Mathematics Master (IMM). At first, I thought it was a job posting, so I uploaded my CV. To my surprise, I soon received an email inviting me to an interview. It was only then that I realized IMM was not a job but a fully funded master’s program in mathematics. Intrigued, I researched more about IMM and was amazed to learn about its incredible faculty, international exposure, and scholarship opportunities. However, I also noticed that IMM wasn’t widely promoted, which saddened me because such a fantastic program deserved more recognition.
The IMM Experience:
Mathematics Meets Transformation: When I joined IMM, I didn’t know what to expect. My English skills were basic, and I worried about fitting in. But IMM valued my mathematical skills and concepts far more than my communication abilities, which immediately made me feel welcome. The academic structure at IMM was unlike anything I had experienced before. Morning classes were taught by international faculty, and evening sessions were dedicated to problem-solving. For the first time, I experienced how mathematics is studied and taught on a global scale. IMM encouraged me to think deeply about problems rather than just memorizing formulas or methods. I wasn’t a very studious person, but I learned quickly. After my first exam, one of my professors gave me personalized advice on improving my mathematical arguments. They encouraged me to slow down, plan my answers, and refine my writing skills. This feedback, combined with continuous support, transformed my approach to mathematics.
Social Growth and Lifelong Memories: IMM wasn’t just about academics; it was a complete life-changing experience. The professors and students were like a family. We celebrated together, went on outings, and built strong bonds. This supportive environment helped me grow in ways I never imagined. I gained confidence in my communication and social skills. IMM didn’t just teach me mathematics—it made me a better version of myself.
Facing Challenges and Moving Forward: Unfortunately, due to a shift in the program’s structure, I couldn’t complete the master’s degree and graduated with a diploma from ICTP instead. This meant I wasn’t immediately qualified for a PhD program, unlike many of my seniors. The next year was difficult. I struggled with rejections while applying for master’s programs. But my IMM professors, especially Professor Stefano, Professor Diletta, Professor Melkior, and Professor Alfonso, stood by me. They not only wrote recommendation letters but also checked in on my well-being, offering both professional and emotional support. Their belief in me kept me going through the toughest times. Eventually, I was accepted into the Erasmus Mundus Joint Master’s Program, which allows me to study at three universities across Europe. I am currently pursuing this program, and I owe much of my success to the foundation IMM gave me.
Looking Ahead: A Mission to Empower Women: IMM was more than an academic program—it was a journey of self-discovery and growth. It showed me what I am capable of and inspired me to dream big. Now, my goal is to use my journey to inspire and empower other women, especially those from underrepresented communities, to pursue their dreams. I want them to know that no matter where they come from, they can achieve anything with determination, hard work, and the right support. To IMM, I am forever grateful. It didn’t just teach me mathematics—it gave me the courage and confidence to shape my future. Thank you, IMM, for being a part of my journey.
