As part of the “Mathematics for Humanity” grant program by the International Centre for Mathematical Sciences (ICMS), the International Mathematics Master (IMM) is pleased to announce the 2026 edition of their Summer Internship Programme (SIP). The programme is jointly organised with leading academic institutions, notably the Abdus Salam International Centre for Theoretical Physics (ICTP), the Scuola Matematica Interuniversitaria (SMI), and Consorzio Interuniversitario per l’Alta Formazione in Matematica (CIAFM) as affiliated partner.
Academic benefits
The initiative aims to provide to outstanding IMM students currently enrolled either in the Algerian or in the Pakistani IMM Master programme with:
- engagement with internationally recognised professors, young scientists, and IMM alumni.
- the possibility to strengthen their own skills in advanced mathematics;
- advanced training and exposure to interdisciplinary research of mathematics in science and technology;
- exposure to new learning methods and academic topics;
- direct mentorship from leading international scholars;
- engagement with internationally recognised professors, young scientists, and IMM alumni.
The Programme
- July 6 – July 18, 2026, at the Abdus Salam International Centre for Theoretical Physics (ICTP) in Trieste, Italy.
During the first 2-weeks period the participants will be attending mini-courses and advanced research talks on different fields of mathematics, gaining new perspectives on their research field of interest and more. Additionally, each student will have the opportunity to present a topic of their choice in an open poster session and a subsequent internal “Gong talk” session. The preparation of such presentations will be guided by experienced mentors during the stay at ICTP. The didactic schedule will be accompanied by a series of scientific outreach and social activities. - July 20 – August 14, 2026, at the Scuola Matematica Interuniversitaria (SMI) in Perugia, Italy.
The second part of the SIP offers a choice of basic courses consisting of 25 hours of lectures and 15 hours of problem-solving sessions. Students will have to choose and attend two among the following courses: Algebraic Geometry, Complex Analysis, Differential Geometry, Functional Analysis, Mathematical Statistics. At the end of each course the participants will undertake written examinations for which they will be given a final evaluation.
Selected IMM students will be directly enrolled in the SMI programme.
Financial and Logistical Support
Participants to the SIP will be residing at the ICTP Guesthouse in Trieste and at one of the university residences in Perugia during the first and second phases of the programme, respectively. The whole SIP will be financially supported by IMM. Besides the lodging, this includes: pre-paid flight tickets from and to Italy, domestic transportation within Italy (airport and inter-city connections), academic courses registration fees, and a daily allowance for meals and general expenses.
IMM and partners will support and guide selected students with visa processes.
Application Process
The applications are opening soon for around 10 days, after which a feedback notice will be sent to all applicants. Due to limited availability, IMM offers only to 10 students the possibility to participate to the internship.
The selection will be carried on based on a good performance in your IMM courses and your motivation to participate to the programme. Please fill the form below and attach the following documents.
- Transcript of records, or any other document attesting the current status of your grades, possibly including grades received in partial modules of not-yet finished courses. If you will, you are free to provide an additional file for any explanation regarding your grades that you deem necessary.
- Personalised motivational letter, (around 1 page) highlighting what are your main topics/fields of interest, what you expect to gain from this experience and aim to bring to the internship as an added value, and why this summer internship would be particularly suitable and helpful for you. Please include also:
- the name(s) of your local and/or international master thesis advisors (in case you are already in contact),
- potential previously carried out research projects or any other STEM-related projects;
- other events and schools planned to take place in summer you have applied or accepted to.
Stay update, the application form is coming soon!
