Sharing a Vision of Research Without Borders

IMM recently held a public presentation at the Scuola Internazionale Superiore di Studi Avanzati (SISSA) in Trieste, opening a space for dialogue with the local and Italian doctoral and student community. The goal was simple : to share our mission, vision and strategies in order to make our approach to research without borders known, within an academic environment that thrives on critical thinking and exchange.

Why This Meeting Mattered

We strongly believe that our non-for-profit, innovative model for supporting mathematical research deserves visibility and discussion. Excellence does not emerge in isolation and neither should the strategies designed to nurture it. SISSA offered the ideal setting to reflect collectively on existing gaps in mathematical education and research and to explore concrete, structural solutions.

A Dialogue with the Mathematical Community

Thanks to the invitation of SISSA doctoral candidate Thomas Nicosanti, we had the opportunity to engage directly with students and researchers. The discussion went beyond presentations: it became an exchange of perspectives on research, educational inequalities and the challenges faced by talent across different contexts.

These conversations reinforced a key belief of IMM’s work — that listening is as important as proposing, and that meaningful change starts with understanding diverse experiences.

Engagement, Collaboration, and New Ideas

A central aim of the meeting was also to foster active engagement with IMM’s ecosystem. We discussed opportunities for teaching and tutoring, participation in ongoing and future projects and involvement within our alumni and studentship community.

At the same time, we publicly renewed our commitment to nurturing research through high-quality mathematical education. Perhaps most importantly, we rediscovered the pleasure of brainstorming together, exchanging ideas, motivations and visions for the future of mathematics.

Moving Forward Together

Our work can only improve through exchange. Stories, lived experiences and individual perspectives keep on shaping our understanding of global challenges and possible solutions for advancing mathematical research.

Encounters like this remind us that progress in mathematics, and more broadly in education, is a collective effort. One built on dialogue and a shared belief that knowledge grows stronger when properly shared.
