10 IMM students have participated in a fully-funded exchange programme in two high-level educational institutions and to network and learn with other students from all over the world, bringing about fruitful scientific and personal discussions with other mathematicians and passionates.
5 students have first attended a summer school at Scuola Matematica Interuniversitaria (SMI) in Perugia from 21st July to 14th August. Among the courses they have taken there are:
- Algebraic Geometry taught by Brian Harbourn (University of Nebrasca-Lincoln)
- Differential Geometry taught by Renato Ghini Bettiol (City University of New York, Lehman College and Graduate Center)
- Complex Analysis taught by Chiara De Fabritiis (Università Politecnica delle Marche)
- Functional analysis held by Jarosław Mederski (Institute of Mathematics, Polish Academy of Sciences, Warsaw)
5 more students joined for the second part of the internship at the prestigious Abdus Salam International Centre for Theoretical Physics (ICTP) in Trieste.

At ICTP IMM students have taken part into courses, seminars, poster sessions and much more – including ICTP graduation ceremony and a day trip to Venice!

IMM Director and Founder Peter Stevenhagen and Stefano Luzzatto are accompanying mathematicians and physicists from around Europe in teaching:
- “Fourier analysis and the Riemann hypothesis” by Emanuel Carneiro, ICTP
- “Adversarial Risk Analysis” held by Fabrizio Ruggeri, from Istituto di Matematica Applicata e Tecnologie Informatiche within National Research Council.
- “Determinism and randomness in nature and mathematics“: historical background to explanatory mathamatical models”” – Stefano Luzzatto, ICTP
- “Approximation theorems in complex analysis” with Anna Miriam Benini, professors at Parma University.
- “Algebraic numbers and statistics” held by Peter Stevenhagen, Leiden University
- “Statistical mechanics of neural networks” held by Mauro Pastore, from ICTP Physics Department.
They were also involved in social and sport activities, deepening not only what Maths is about and how to strengthen their research and analytical skills. They have also delved into the beauty of mountains and the see in one of the most stunning regions of Italy!
What’s more is that this internship will run for 3 years. Stay up to date with next year call for applications!
